A Cozy Winter Weekend in Hocking Hills

3 min read

Here is a little secret we wish more people knew: winter might be the most magical season in Hocking Hills. When the hills go quiet and the snow settles over the trees, the whole region feels like a world away, hushed and soft and impossibly beautiful. Step outside your cabin on a winter morning, coffee in hand, and that feeling of being one with nature is somehow even deeper in the stillness. We are a small family owned business, and winter is the season we most love letting guests in on. Here is how to do it right.

The winter magic most visitors miss

A lot of people assume you should not visit in the winter, that if you cannot hike, or if a few things are closed, there is no reason to come. We understand the instinct, and we promise it is wrong.

The truth is that so much of the magic is right at your cabin. Wake up to a snow-dusted view out the window, watch the flakes fall from a warm hot tub, and let the pace of a winter day be exactly as slow as you want it. Snow-covered Hocking Hills is genuinely, achingly beautiful, and you get to experience it with almost none of the crowds. That is the part people miss. Winter here is not a lesser season. It is a quieter, cozier, more intimate one.

And if your group loves to hike, you still can. Plenty of our guests do. They just come with the right gear, check the forecast, and know their comfort level, because the trails can be slick when it is cold. Do that, and a winter hike to a frozen waterfall is something you will never forget.

Get cozy: saunas, hot tubs, and snow

The heart of a winter weekend is the cabin itself, so choose one built to get warm and stay warm. There is a special kind of joy in easing into a sauna after a cold day, or slipping into a steaming hot tub while the snow comes down around you. Valhalla Hills has a sauna and a hot tub and a peaceful, restorative calm that makes it perfect for a wellness-minded winter escape, and Pickle Hill has a sauna too for a smaller group. Nearly all of our homes have a hot tub and a firepit, so wherever you land, you can get cozy.

When you want to venture out, warm up with coffee at Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium or the Oasis Coffee Shop, settle in with a glass at Hocking Hills Winery or Le Petit Chevalier, and bring home comfort food from Millstone BBQ or Pizza Crossing.

Winter is holiday-gathering season

Winter is also when families come together, and there is nothing better than a central home big enough to hold everyone, with room to gather and space for people to slip away when they need it. For the whole family or a holiday reunion, Loch Llyn and The Farm at Nickel Plate each sleep well over twenty, with big kitchens, game rooms, and gathering spaces made for memory-making. For a smaller, intimate holiday, Dunkle Creek and Rickenbacker Ridge are pure cozy. See them all on our properties page.

Holiday and New Year weekends are among the first to book, and the large homes go earliest because groups plan far ahead. If a winter gathering is in your future, now is the time to claim it.
