The Best Fall Weekends in Hocking Hills (and What to Do on Them)

A fall weekend in Hocking Hills has a rhythm all its own. You drive in as the hills roll and the color deepens, you step out of the cabin into crisp air and that deep quiet, and for two or three days you get to be fully present, one with nature, surrounded by the most beautiful season this region has. When are the best fall weekends?
In our experience, the best fall weekends run from mid-September through late October, with the color usually peaking in the last couple weeks of October. Early fall gives you comfortable hiking weather and the first turning leaves, while late October brings the full, glowing display. And because this is Ohio, we sometimes get gorgeous weather holding into early November, so do not count that window out either. Whenever you come, plan your days around the forecast and you will be glad you did.
One honest heads up: these are the most in-demand weekends of the year, and they book up early, often sixty to ninety days ahead. If a fall weekend is on your mind, claim your dates before someone else does.
A perfect fall weekend, hour by hour
Here is the kind of weekend we would plan for you.
Friday evening. Arrive, settle in, and let the drive melt off you. Light the firepit, get the hot tub going, and just take in the fact that you are here. If you want dinner brought to the table without a fuss, Pizza Crossing is a beloved local spot and they have always been so kind to our guests.
Saturday morning. Start slow with coffee at Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium or the Oasis Coffee Shop, and grab a cinnamon roll from The Dough Maker at Stella's Mercantile. Then head for the trails while the light is beautiful. Choose your hike by your group's comfort level: Ash Cave for an easy, stunning walk, Old Man's Cave for the classic gorge experience, or the Conkle's Hollow rim trail for big views over the color. Saturday afternoon. Warm up and slow down. An afternoon at a winery is the essence of fall here, Le Petit Chevalier and Hocking Hills Winery are both lovely, and Rockmill Brewery and Distillery has beautiful grounds. Saturday evening. Back to the cabin for a good meal, Millstone BBQ is a favorite if you want to bring dinner in, then the firepit, the stars, and each other.
Sunday. Take one more easy walk or a scenic drive through the hills, and if you have the time, Lake Hope is about thirty minutes east and worth the little adventure. Then a slow morning on the deck before you go, promising yourselves you will be back.
