There is a stretch of the year when Hocking Hills becomes almost unreal. When does the fall color peak in Hocking Hills?

In most years, peak fall foliage in Hocking Hills lands in mid to late October, with the deepest, most saturated color usually arriving in the last two weeks of the month. The change builds gradually: you will often catch the first turning leaves in late September, real color filling in through early and mid October, and the grand finale in that final stretch before the leaves begin to drop into early November.

Here is the honest part, and it matters. This is Ohio, so the weather has a personality of its own and it can change fast. A warm spell can hold the green a little longer, and a cold snap or a windy week can move things along quicker than expected. Some years we even get beautiful color and mild weather stretching into early November. So think of mid to late October as your best bet, not a guarantee, and keep an eye on the forecast as your trip gets close.

The best trails to see the color

Almost every trail here turns spectacular in the fall, but a few are especially worth it. Choose based on your group's comfort level, and take your time, because this is scenery you will want to slow down for.

Ash Cave is the gentle one, an easy, accessible walk to a massive recess cave framed by turning trees. Old Man's Cave is the iconic Hocking Hills hike, with gorges, waterfalls, and canopy color overhead. Conkle's Hollow's rim trail rewards a bit more effort with long views over a valley on fire with color, and Cantwell Cliffs and Cedar Falls are stunning this time of year too. Make a full fall day of it

Fall here is not only the hikes. After a morning on the trails, warm up with coffee at Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium or the Oasis Coffee Shop, and treat yourself to a cinnamon roll from The Dough Maker, which you can find at Stella's Mercantile. An afternoon at a winery is pure fall magic: Le Petit Chevalier and Hocking Hills Winery are both beautiful, and Rockmill Brewery and Distillery sits on gorgeous grounds. For dinner, Millstone BBQ and Pizza Crossing are local favorites.

Clouds Reach has a valley view and, wonderfully, a heated pool that stays open into late November, so you can actually swim while the leaves turn. This is the most important tip we can give you. Fall is the most popular season in Hocking Hills, and the best October weekends are claimed months in advance. We generally see fall and holiday weekends fill up sixty to ninety days out, and the prime peak-color dates go first. If you are dreaming about a fall trip, the time to book it is now, not when the leaves are already turning.
